Along the eastern edge of the bay is Ilulissat, the third largest town in Greenland. The name means “iceberg” in Greenlandic, a reference to its location at the mouth of the iceberg- lled Ilulissat Ice Fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Photo: SRuth Ásgeirsdóttir East Greenland East Greenland is one of the most isolated areas in the world. To the west, the massive central icecap rises 8,000 feet. To the east is the open ocean, strewn with dri ing sea ice from the North Pole. This seclusion is the reason why traditions and culture run deeper here than anywhere else in Greenland.
