      The Greenland ice cap produces 250 million tons of icebergs each summer and their final journey begins when they break off from glaciers and plunge directly into crystal-clear fjords. Near Narsarsuaq we sail through the Qoroq Ice Fjord, weaving through hundreds of icebergs with a mesmerizing view of the Qoroq glacier off in the distance. We reach the Qoroq Ice Fjord in 30 minutes by boat. We cruise in between the icebergs and sail into the fjord to see the glacier in the distant. Here the captain stops the engine and we enjoy the arctic scenery and the silence.

      In Qassiarsuk you will meet your guide for your hike through stunning arctic landscapes to the remote community of Tasiusaq. The largely treeless and rocky fjord landscape of South Greenland resembles the fjords of western Norway. At the end you find sheep farms that give new meaning to the word ‘remote’. It used to be home of sheep farmers but nowadays it is abandoned. Sheep and the occasional eagle can be seen, but this hike is mainly about the beauty of the landscape – enjoy the beautiful view of the fjord system and the arctic nature.

      In Qassiarsuk you will meet your guide for your hike through stunning arctic landscapes to the remote community of Tasiusaq.       An aerial perspective gives a true sense of Greenland’s unbelievable size. During this “Flightseeing-Tour” by helicopter you see details that you would miss from an airplane. Flying low and slow, Greenland’s spectacular natural features like glacial moulins and icebergs seem to be right below your feet. The helicopter flies at low altitude over the coastal mountains for about 15 minutes before landing in front of the glacier. Use the pause of approx. 30 minutes to inspect and photograph the amazing glacier face before flying back.

      The Narsarsuaq Museum will open their doors exclusively for all guests of the OCEAN DIAMOND. The museum was established in 1991 and houses a large collection of photos and artefacts from the American base “Bluie West One”. The base was in operation from 1941 until 1958. The collection also has a section with focus on the Norse settlers and especially Erik the Red, who settled in Greenland more than 1,000 years ago.

  • Nuuk Capital of Greenland

      In Greenland there’s only one way to craft beer: microbrew which uses only regional products. Breweries in Greenland are by default micro, as they cater to small towns and settlements. The major microbrewery is Godthaab Bryghus in Nuuk which we will visit on this excursion. Get a taste of Greenlandic beer which flavor comes from the extraordinary waters which mostly originates from glaciers or the ice cap.

      A short approx. 10 minutes bus ride takes us to our starting point: the foot of the mountain Lille Malene. Soon you are out in the clean and untouched wilderness with magnificent views over the Nuuk fjord system, which is the second largest system that way in the world. The hike takes us along a trail with streams and small lakes. It provides many beautiful spots which are perfect for photo stops and lunchbreak. A local guide will accompany us and will answer any questions you may have on the local environment or life in Greenland.

      Meat from marine mammals, game, birds and fish has been the main ingredient in Greenlandic food for generations. The bus brings you to the outskirt of the city to the small Inuk Hostel. Here your local guide will invite you to a tasting of Greenlandic products while he gives you an overview on hunting traditions and how hunting still defines the life of many Greenlanders.       On this walking tour a local guide describes everyday life in Sisimiut, as well as the history, buildings and places you pass. The walk starts at the harbor, brings you to the old city center passing by the fish market all the way to the local dog yard. If we are lucky we might even get to see some puppies. Different Inuit cultures used the Tele-Island as hunting grounds for many years. Learn about the way they lived as we walk past turf hut ruins and a burial ground. It is one of the best preserved museums in Greenland und focusses on Greenlandic culture, Greenlandic trade and industry history as well as the important shipping industry. The old buildings originate from the Danish colonial time and the original colors are still preserved.

  • Ilulissat The town of the icebergs

      Originally founded by the Danes as a trading post in 1741, Ilulissat is today the third largest town in Greenland, with over 4,500 inhabitants. Accompanied by a local guide you learn more about life 200 miles above of the Arctic Circle. After the city walk your guide will take you on an easy but wonderful walk to the icebergs of Sermermiut. From there you can look into the stunning fjord and enjoy the silence and the

      Ilulissat means “icebergs” in Greenlandic and the Ilulissat Ice Fjord is impressive whether viewed from the air or the sea.       After an approx. 10 minutes bus ride we reach the premises of a local sledge dog owner. You can see, feel and certainly hear the howling of the dogs. The owner will tell you traditional stories about how the Inuits use and used the dogs for hunting and how they, together, are able to relay more than hundreds of miles in the arctic landscape. Besides the enchanting stories, you will see a dog sledge and hear more about the techniques to use it.

      Uummannaq Museum tells fantastic stories from the region. Particularly interesting is the museum’s exhibition of the extensive polar exploration that took place and Alfred Wegener’s expedition on a propeller-driven sled on the Ice Sheet. Wegener became world-famous due to his theory of continental drift. His aim was to build a scientific station in the middle of the Ice Sheet. The museum also houses copies of the famous Qilaktisog mummies, which were discovered in this area in 1972. The church next door is the only stone church in Greenland and is also open for our guests to visit.

      Guided sightseeing in Qeqertasuaq, where you get an insight into the town´s ancient and modern history. Qeqertersuaq is the only town on Disko Island (the big island), and a city that stands alone far off Greenlands´s west coast and the Lyngmark Glacier that towers above the town. This remote town is about 62 miles west of Ilulissat.

      The “Valley of the Winds” is located right outside of Qeqertarsuaq. Sometimes, a heavy wind blows on this Arctic plateau. That is where the valley Blaesedalen received its name from. But the valley also impresses with its waterfalls and large scenic variety with diversified flora and fauna. Some of the world’s largest icebergs drift by the coastal route.

      Get a feeling of what it’s like to live like a Greenlander by visiting the folk house at a Greenlandic Kaffemik. Kaffemik is an old tradition where a family invites many guests into their home to celebrate special events of all kinds - births and birthdays, first days at school and confirmations - but the real enjoyment comes from being in a room filled with people. While enjoying coffee / tea and homemade cake witness a traditional Greenlandic Folk Dance.

      Greenland´s majestic landscape looks quite differently when being on a dog sled. Take the only opportunity to go dog sledding in the summer! You will be picked up by helicopter and flown to Lyngmark Glacier for your dog sled adventure. Enjoy the scenic views already on your helicopter flight. Dog sleds, which take 2 people each, await you at the top of the glacier. Hop on the sled and experience the adventure of your life! At the end the helicopter will bring you back to the ground.

      Due to its characteristic octagonal shape, the church in Qeqertarsuaq is called the Lord’s Ink Pot and is definitely worth visiting. During our stay it will be open for visits. The inhabitants of Qeqertarsuaq are going to present their national costumes and a choir will entertain us with beautiful hymns. The tradition of hymn singing in four-part chorales was introduced by Danish missionaries in the last century, and over time has developed into traditional Greenlandic choral singing.
